Biography of H.H. The 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, Mipham Chokyi Lodro

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche

Many kalpas ago there was a being who achieved Buddhahood as the Tathagata Konchok Yenlak. In the present good kalpa, blessed by the coming of one thousand Buddhas, this Tathagata will manifest in the form of a great Bodhisattva with a bright ruby-red crown. He will help many beings.

In this way, the Buddha Sakyamuni made a prediction about Shamarpa in the "Good Kalpa Sutra".

The 3rd Karmapa presented to his principal disciple, Khendrup Drakpa Senge (the 1st Shamar Rinpoche) a ruby-red crown to symbolise the identicalness of their realization and accomplishments. The Karmapa also bestowed on him the name "Shamarpa" - The One With The Red Hat, thus fulfiling the prophesy of Buddha Sakyamuni. The Shamarpa or known more formally as Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche is the senior lineage holder of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, second only to the Gyalwa Karmapa. He is widely recognised as an emanation of Buddha Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light and Boundless Life.

The present 14th Shamar Rinpoche, Mipham Chokyi Lodro was borned in 1952 in Derge, Tibet. At the age of four he was recognised as the Shamarpa incarnation by H.H. The Late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. In 1959 he left Tibet together with H.H. The Late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. He was formally enthroned on the 15th day of the 4th month of the male wood dragon year (1964) by the Karmapa in the old Rumtek monastery in Sikkim, India. Having already begun study with the Karmapa in Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet, Shamar Rinpoche continued to study under His direction in Sikkim, India. Shamar Rinpoche received all the instructions of the Kagyu Lineage from H.H. The Late 16th Gyalwa Karmapa and other high lamas. After completion of his studies in 1979, Shamar Rinpoche was sent to Nepal by the Karmapa to take up residence as the Chief Representative of the Karma Kagyu Lineage.

Since the passing away of H.H. The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa in 1981, Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche has completed H.H. 16th Karmapa's wishes, including establishing The Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in New Delhi, India. This institute is to serve as an establishment of higher learning to further universal wisdom and compassion, based on the correct study and translation of the great treatises of Buddhism. It was inaugurated in February 1990 by then Presidents of India, Mr. Venkataraman.

In 2005, Shamar Rinpoche founded the retreat centre of Shar Minub in Kathmandu, Nepal. At Shar Minub, the resident monks strickly maintain the full 253 vows of the vinaya. These monks are total renunciants and dedicated meditators. In January 2009, Shamar Rinpoche founded the Infinite Compassion Foundation to promote animal rights, particularly the humane treatment of animals that are raised for consumption of their meat and other product (especially dairy and eggs), so that animals will no longer be forced to live and die in brutal conditions.

Many of the Shamarpas were great scholars and stand out in terms of their intellectual contributions. The present Shamar Rinpoche authored two important books. "Creating a Transparent Democracy: a New Model", the first book written about democracy by a Tibetan Buddhist teacher, lay out a framework for establishing a genuine democratic system of governance that promotes the welfare and prosperity of a population. "The Path to Awakening" provides an extensive commentary on Chekawa Yeshe Dorje's Seven Point of Mind Training. Chekawa's text was based on the Mind Training (lojong) teachings brought to Tibet by Atisha in the 11th century; and Shamar Rinpoche's commentary elucidates the inner meaning of Chekawa's Seven Points. It is both a guide to livng a fulfiling life as a Buddhist and a comprehensive manual of meditation techniques.

Shamar Rinpoche has also established many Dharma Centres in Europe and America. At present Shamar Rinpoche travels extensively around the world giving teachings and empowerments to benefits countless sentient beings.

Information and Benefits of various Empowerments and Pujas

Buddha Amitabha Empowerment

Buddha Amitabha

Buddha Amitabha, the most well-known and popular of the five Dhyani Buddhas, is the main yidam of the Lotus Family and The Lord of the Western Pureland, the land of great bliss. In Tibetan Buddhism, Buddha Amitabha is usually depicted in red color sitting on a peacock throne. Red Color symbolize love, compassion and emotion energy. Peacock symbolizes the ability of transforming the emotional poisons into wisdom. Thus the practice of Buddha Amitabha enables one to pacify the emotional poisons, particularly the emotion of desire and transform the aggregate of perception and the sixth consciousness into the wisdom of discrimination.

Buddha Amitabha is also known as the Buddha of Boundless Light (Wisdom) and Boundless Life. Thus the practice of Buddha Amitabha also brings wisdom, longevity and great happiness.

According to the Buddha Amitabha Sutra, one needs to only recite the name of Buddha Amitabha with one pointed mind to ensure rebirth in the Western Pureland. This is possible due to compassionate vow of Buddha Amitabha. "If one believes in this , then vows to take rebirth in the pureland of great bliss and practices accordingly, one will definitely be received by Buddha Amitabha at the time of death."

Chenrezig Empowerment

White 4 Arms Chenrezig

Chenrezig born out of the wisdom light emitted from the eyes of Buddha Amitabha, is looked upon as the manifestation of the loving-kindness and compassion of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. His activity is to assist Buddha Amitabha to empty the pit of samsara and liberate all sentient beings to the pureland of great bliss. Thus he has a very special affinity with beings in samsara and can manifest into various forms to help beings who are in varying kinds of needs.

The practice of Chenrezig is very popular in Asia. Through prayers to and meditation on Chenrezig, one aspiras to transform one's negative qualities into selfless motivation to help others. Reciting his six-syllables mantra "Om Mani Padme Hung" is like practising the Six Perfections and is able to close the doors to the six realms. In this life, one is able to remove obstacles, have success in life, harmony in family, be healthy and prosperious, and have all wishes fulfilled. In the next life, it is certain that one will be able to take rebirth in pure land.

"Sang" Smoke Puja

Traditionally, the "Sang" smoke puja is performed to mark important events such as New Year Day; one's birthday; etc. It's also performed as an offering of perfect fragrance which has been purified of its ordinary qualities and appearance, to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Meditation Deities, Dharma Protectors and local worldly gods; as a request to remove obstacles, ensure success to all our activities and to heal diseases.

Some of the many benefits of performing the "Sang" smoke puja are:
» Resolution of problems with all grieving relatives and creditors from past generations.
